It's so true...

Leader Of The Pack lyrics

hey, is he really goin' out with her?
there he is, let's ask him
hey man, is that your ring she's wearin'?
uh, huh
man, it must be great ridin' with her
are you pickin' her up after school today?
uh uh
by the way where'd you meet her
i met her at the candy store
she turned around and smiled at me
you get the picture?
yeah, we see
that's when she fell for
the leader of the pack
her folks were always putting me down
they said i came from the wrong side of town
they told her that i was bad
but she knew i was sad
that's why she fell for
the leader of the pack

I was watching a rented copy of Twilight, the Vampire movie, which Jim got at the grocery store for 1.65 a day, and has reminded me that it has been TWO whole days!!! already. Robert had the same reaction to this DVD which I had, and observed that he "wanted to go the dentist on an elevator" rather than watch this.

However I was busy dressing two dolls as the Shirelles : here they are singing Leader of the Pack. Don't get that much around your local soda shops anymore...

Margot Potter's new book -- Beyond the Bead

What a Book! Spectacular, Craftacular, and Delivers Unique Projects on Every Page!
If you are not yet familiar with Margot Potter, and with her generous, openhearted manner of teaching, you are in for a delightful surprise. You are going to enjoy all sorts of exciting new techniques to savor, think about, and store away for the next time you need inspiration! New things are headed your way in this great book, Beyond the Bead. In fact, in every case, you will be charmed by them!

Author Margot has a solid background of classical teaching in the jewelry arena, and yet in each of her books (Margot becomes more prolific every year!) I discover, once again, that her flat out brilliance urges the reader forward, and, together with her genuine enthusiasm, the deal is clinched, art wise.
Margot has a "voice", and it is pure, fun, and clear. When she creates, her voice is very distinctive in each project. On the other hand, the reader can take what he or she wants from each tutorial and learn super fun and different ways to challenge the art process. As Margot says in her introduction, "Think of this book as a series of pathways down which you might wander...Follow your intuition and see where it leads..."

Good advice from one of the major leaders in the jewelry and craft design fields!

After the initial introduction and listings of what is required for tools and techniques, Margot welcomes you into a magical world called The Looking Glass. This includes techniques for working with glass. Her stained glass project is particularly lovely, and, as always, the author demonstrates her knack for combining fantastic colors together.
Note that each chapter is quite hefty and full of projects: the next one is Plastic Fantastic and very appealing! Many of us could use a bit of help learning the ins and outs of working with plastic. This is a great book with which to start honing your plastic technique! Her first project, Nice and Naughty, is excellent. I also love the project Buddhalicious in this chapter! Such a rainbow of shimmery joy! You will want to learn to make this when you see it!
The next chapter, Cyber Crafty, is a wonder of new ways to use digital images in your jewelry designs. There is loveliness in little books and pendant collages, and if you have ever wondered how to make them, here you go! Lettres D'Amour has your name all over it!
I wish to impress upon you (a bit of a pun!) that none of these projects are terribly difficult. On the other hand, they look like a million bucks. What more could you ask of a design book? I find the concept thrilling!

Ephemerally Yours is the chapter which follows. It is a fascinating collection of demonstrations concerning how to create jewelry incorporating ephemera. I feel that Margot has a strong talent for this, and I adore every project in this chapter. I look forward to learning more about how to utilize this sort of technique!
The chapter Scrapped follows. Of course it involves scrap booking supplies. How fun! A featured project from the book's cover, I'll Fly Away, appears here, and if you have seen the cover I know you will agree that it is so breathtakingly lovely! It is a poem in a jewelry set! The greens are so soft and beautiful. The stamped birds and nest with eggs imprinted upon the pendant and earrings are fantastic. You will adore this design piece! It is created to look like faux enamel. It does indeed!
In the following chapter, another piece which graces the books cover wows you: Something Blue. I simply do not know many designers who have the sense of color which Margot has. It is hers and hers alone! This beautiful piece is amazing! It is as if someone has deepened the color of fine turquoise and made it a turquoise flame, then suspending it from gunmetal chain. It is super!

That chapter is called Mud Pies, and the necklace is made of polymer. The final chapter follows and is called Mrs. Fix it, a great name for techniques for working with metal! I decided to let you in on the last project in the book: it is a beauty! I don't think too many people could have come up with this other than Margot Potter! Using a metal necklace blank beneath, Margot laid out hardware store washers in all sorts of sizes and covered them with blended inks. She used metal friendly glue to adhere them to the necklace blank, and it has a prize winning drama and impact. You will just have to buy this book to see it and try it for yourself!

I wish to congratulate Margot on this remarkably beautiful, truly hip and fun to use book. I can never believe that she manages to find the time to come up with these fabulous ideas. Yet, she does. Life is short. Margot savors every bit of it! I look forward to the next wonders which Margot comes up with, as she skips, soars, hops, and jumps down the path of joyful creativity every day of her life.

Take this book and learn to make fantastic things from it! I guarantee you that you will adore it!

Fun with www.Artbeads.com, the great online store

Shown below: necklace by Jean Yates using beads and components from Artbeads!

please hit on the photo of the necklace to enlarge it--much better in detail! Thanks!

The exceptional online store, Artbeads.com , has offered me, once a month, the opportunity to review all sorts of interesting new things, or to design jewelry using their findings and beads, or to demonstrate and explain my designs and ideas, using their products for you to check out here in my blog. How cool!

I got my first collection of items from Artbeads this week. Everything arrived in the blink of an eye, and beautifully packaged as always!
I think this is going to be fun!
I love to review things as many of you may know. I have lots of books and items I review. I am well known for this. However, I am a jewelry designer first and foremost, so I decided, this first time, to make a necklace with items which I had chosen from a list Artbeads offered me. And, yes! Of course it is called:

the "Polly Wants a Cracker" necklace. The reason for the name is pretty clear!

I made this piece yesterday, with one of my sons making bird noises, sitting next to me (bird noises are his favorite noises to make!), his attention on the beautiful parrot bead I was working with, and the rest of his attention on the gorgeous full color Artbeads calendar we had received as well. His other favorite thing is CALENDARS! How did they know?

As an aside, I have loved the Artbeads online store since day one. I used it frequently while writing and designing my projects in Links, my book. If you cannot find something you are looking for, ALWAYS check Artbeads.com! Also, if you are up late at night and cannot sleep, head over there and do a little shopping. It has things no other stores have. That is is a great prompt for your creativity.

--Things such as:

My beloved onyx laquered parrot pendant, which I discovered here: Russian Pendants These are truly museum quality beads! Like the traditional folkloric Russian boxes, these pendants are hand painted, each by an expert artist, trained for years in this one particular craft. Each one is stunningly unique and intricate. I encourage you to visit the store to see all of them, as there are many different styles. They are irresistible and might just become part of one of your own signature pieces of hand designed jewelry!
I chose the Blue-headed Amazon Parrot pendant (item AB-PAT3) because summer is coming, and I wanted to express the beauty and joyous nature of the upcoming season. I added Swarovski Crystals, see here: swarovski crystal beads I chose bicones because I like rectangles with rectangular pendants and also because their pointed ends fit well into the holes of the main pendant. I tried to mimic the bird's feather colors, using
5mm Capri Blue (5301-BLU5) Emerald (5301EMS) and Peridot(5301-PERS) and in 8mm Capri blue (5301-BLU8)--all bicones.

I made sure to wrap this pendant with a top and bottom bead to accent it and to protect it as well, using the heaviest possible gauge head pin available. This was a 3" long 20 gauge head pin (SS-HP03). The smaller Swarovski dangles I made, including the other 8mm bicone, were all wrapped on 2" sterling silver 22 gauge head pins.

I wanted to add joyous swing, brilliance and flash to the pendant, and these crystals did the trick! All the colors played off the exotic bird. His painted feathers did end up looking amazing. To add to that, I also used something new and fabulous which I have never seen before--oooh!!! the potential of some fantastic Enameled Round Copper Links which I chose to add in Neon Yellow (DT-0047). They come in another fabulous shape, Rectangle, as well. You can mix and match them and switch colors! They have incredible potential. Mine are 15 mm in width, to give you an idea of the size. They are located here: Enameled Round Copper Links

* Tip from Jean: when you design with these Enamel Links, check out how large the interior of your sterling jump rings you are using to attach the links together are. You want to make sure the Enamel Links have enough play in between their holes, when you connect them to each other. By this I mean, check the distance between holes from the bottom hole of the top Enamel circle which you are connecting, by using a jump link to the top hole of the next Enamel circle. It may be more of a distance that you thought. If the jump rings are not large enough, you will need to go out and get jump rings with larger inner IDs! That is not something you want to bother with!

I am thrilled I chose to locate a 1.2mm sterling 16" necklace from Artbeads as well, because this unusually lovely pendant really deserves shiny sterling to play it up, to my mind...not a cord. On your more relaxed days, choose a cord. There are rainbow colored silk ribbons at Artbeads I admit I did consider for this necklace. They are located here:silk ribbons Additionally, faux suede would be nice in the winter, if you continue to wish to wear your necklace year round. And why not? I plan to!

For now, however, if you are dressing up to go out to dinner at a resort, consider the sterling snake chain (SNKCHN-16B)) first. And relax, soaking up the sun and the compliments as you have Champagne Mimosas! Or the fresh pineapple juice. With the tiny parasols! You can't lose!

Artbeads--this was a truly entertaining experience! I look forward to the next time! Is it next month yet?

Thank you, Artbeads.com, one of my favorite stores, without question!

when I saw this photo from Kim Miles

when I saw this photo from Kim Miles

I felt true happiness!

No, Kim hasn't decided to get four dogs. Gaaaaaaaaah!
That would be a bit much, I think but I could be wrong!
But don't they look cute? They look as if they do belong together! I do not know how she did this, but this is one of the BEST dog photos I have ever seen. This is typical of Kim. She has masses of talent in all directions. Who know she would be a dog whisperer however? Ah! Go to www.Kimmiles.com , where the softly colored spring beads are hatching like pastel Easter eggs under a sweet blue sky full of fabulous puffy clouds...which look like playful dogs... which look like eggs...which look like beads...and so it goes!

Soft Flex Company: The first wire manufactuer to Go "GREEN" and create the world's first totally eco-friendly beading wire.

Yes, I took the photo above, to show how lovely the wire is. It goes with everything! The colors in this Trio Extreme pack are 24 Kt. Gold, 925 Sterling Silver, and ...listen to this: Champagne! I had my breath taken away by their beauty. I was also thrilled by the quality of these environmentally friendly, innovative beading wires by the Soft Flex Company! It seems to me to be the right thing to do. That is correct: Bead Green!
*Just as an extra note: there are other Soft Flex beading wires of the sort you are used to and already love. They now come packed for you in trios as well, with great names like "Mystical", to enhance the mood when you bead ... so that, for example, you might choose to use your wire IN your designs to play off your translucent beads of stone and glass. Picture your lovely smooth soft toned rose quartz beads on a deeper tone of fuchsia. How fab! Now, you take it from there.
It is just a wonder, what you will be able to do! It's very exciting to be a designer these days!

Here is how the Trio of Metallics comes. see below:

And below, shown here, is an amazing braided bracelet which my friend Jamie Hogsett designed, with a link to it as well:
http://www.softflexcompany.com/Project_107.html: It's called the "Mixed Metals Bracelet" : Jamie: if you are reading this...oh....uh...oh hi! Hi Jamie! :)
Everyone should make this bracelet and we could ALL be friends, all over the world!
Wouldn't that be the best symbol of a new dawn? I think so!

So therefore, look for this symbol.

And what an incredible symbol it is! It truly is!

As Sara Hardin, all around wonderful person and Marketing Manager for the Soft Flex Company said to me, “We worked on this product for YEARS! We made a lot of sacrifices to create a quality product that is flexible & brilliant in color. I’m very proud of this wire…we all are.”

In her email, concerning this great wire, which is lustrous, stunning and supple, were the following notations, which include links so that you can check out what "going green" really means to the Soft Flex Company and to all of us, now, and in the future:

Soft Flex Company is the first beading wire manufacturer to introduce a totally "green" beading wire: http://www.softflexcompany.com/CategoryProductList.jsp?cat=Soft+Flex+Extreme

Jim, flowers, and love of colors and life... Serendipitous Sunday part 2

by jean
by jim

Jim LOVES flowers and loves arranging them. I never know what to expect in the kitchen except, frankly, that there won't be enough room for the food!

The thing I like is that he puts them near the kitchen window and it all looks like so Dutch oil painting from the something hundreds. Very lovely. I don't know if I ever wrote this before but once, I got tired of Jim bringing home flowers because it was so hard to deal with them at the same time as I was putting away the groceries and cooking dinner. I started yelling around about too much stuff to do and, chastened, Jim didn't bring home flowers for quite a while. WOW! That was awful! Do not do that to your soulmate, poeple. Jim loves his flowers and I love Jim. Jim must have these flowers to grow and to connect to life. This is one of the ways that Jim expresses his artistic nature. And his flat-out love of nature!

Like the food I cook, Jim needs to see the flowers in the kitchen, and to care for them. It is a part of the cycle of our lives that I must remember to allow to "be".

Book Review by jean

Designing Jewelry
with semiprecious beads

by Kim Gover

Kim Gover's beautiful book, Designing Jewelry with semiprecious beads, urges you back to your roots if your first love was stones, as mine was. If that was not where you began your jewelry journey, congratulations! Here is the book to learn from about designing with semiprecious stones! You may think they are all expensive, but this is not the case. There is a good guide within the book which marks with dollar signs how expensive the range for each type of stone is, along with photos of the stone, a bit of lore about it, where it is sourced, and some of the forms it comes in, such as rounds, rondelles, etc.
There is no question that I thoroughly enjoy equally wandering into mixed media, lampwork (the author is a lampwork artist as well, and there is a lovely necklace with a lampwork bead on it in this book), polymer, plastic and other types of beads used for designing. However, once again, because of this book, I intensely understand to my core what it is to gather up that first strand of semiprecious stones, and hold it up to the light. It becomes a sort of glorious potential in my fingers, calling to me as a designer to work with it!

As you can see, I feel this is a great book! With over seventy five projects from a variety of designers, who lay out their techniques beautifully clearly, with explanations for why something goes with what, and wonderful photography, the author hits a complete home run with this collection of inspiring, glamorous, lyrical, colorful, fascinatingly put together pieces.
I wish that this had been my first jewelry book. The reason for this is that if you can design with color, understand your stones, learn your techniques, and get a lesson in what semiprecious stones have meant since each type was discovered, you have a book to return to time and time again.
You will learn to make wraps on beads, use head pins and eye pins, knot onto a clasp, knot cups on a multistrand piece, and more. As well you will learn how to choose which stones to put with which other stones. This is where people might consider beginning when they are eager to learn everything but don't want to lay out the cash for a number of books or DVDs or online tutorials. Specifically, if you want to learn about, or to work with colored semiprecious stones, even just seeing what the newest ones like Larimar look like, if you want to perfect your design layout, or your understanding of WHAT those materials are you are working with, what you will generally need to expect to spend, and what sort of cuts you might be able to find, along with (deep breath!) what kinds of tools you will need, and what sorts of styles you might like to try, you will see that here is a panoply of beautiful ideas available for you to peruse.

A super job by author Kim Gover and her contributors, Designing Jewelry with semiprecious beads is well worth your time!

Tools for the Road

Albert and Audrey in THE 1967 movie classic "Two for the Road". The only other thing she needed was a set of tools and a Tri Fold Tool and Bead Wrap, from Lisa Kan!
We all know of Lisa Kan's beautiful beading book at this point, see above! --but did you know...this? here is some cool news:

I received a surprise in the way of a lovely gift from Lisa Kan this past week. Now I feel everyone should know about it! Lisa has been selling some fantastic tools on her site http://lisakan.com/ --you can only get them from her! You can go see them there!

Now come these great tool wraps to go with them, which she has designed. The wraps make the most fantastic and pretty carriers for Lisa's five piece set of superb, Japanese, stainless steel tools. Plus, they are perfectly thought out.
Lisa's sister helped her with the carriers which are called Tri-fold Tool and Bead Wraps. Lisa's sister has great talent sewing, and these are carefully and wonderfully made, one at a time. Mine is stunning and fits my set of Lisa's tools to perfection.
If you like to bead on the road ( Oh, yoo-hoo! Flying, or riding in the passenger's seat only, please!), or at your friends' houses, having beading parties (I could use one of those parties right now!), or all cosy in bed with your tools and your jewelry-in-progress well contained on your lap, with the TV on, this excellently designed wrap is something I suggest you look into. Not only lovely and hand made, as I said, by Lisa's sister, who is a person of wondrous good taste just like Lisa, the fabrics are stunning and the wraps are perfectly sewn in every way. I give this product five stars as a gift to a pal or relative, too, especially if you include the tool set as well! Wow! That would be a great gift!
The set of Tools are fantastic, and suitable for wire 22 gauge and up
The Tri fold Tool and Bead Wraps carry beads and tools perfectly and are simply terrific!

New earring book on the way by Barb Switzer

The title is catchy and the projects are catchy too:

Earrings, Earrings, Earrings! by Barb Switzer
Although you have to wait a few days to get this book in your hands, you can pre-order it. It is very delightful and truly a jolt of beauty and energy. The way Barb has created this book, it looks as if she went through many different submissions and chose her collection from some of the hardest working, elegant and fun designers going.
I noted that at the end was a additional treat: sets! Demi parures, anyone? I am always interested in sets! And yes, I had a favorite set here, but it is a secret!
At any rate, this feature really finishes off this fine, really well photographed and arranged book like the luscious hard crack brown sugar on creme brulee.
Super book!
