"Dear friend,<--that is me  :)

Metalwork
How to SHAPE, TEXTURE, and
ANTIQUE Wireworked Jewelry
with Ronna Sarvas Weltman

a DVD from the Beading Daily Workshop series

review by jean

What is absolutely mesmerizing? Watching the magic created by Ronna Sarvas Weltman (website: ronnaround) on Metalwork, How to Shape, Texture, and Antique Wiredworked Jewelry from Beading Daily, via Interweave, available among other places, at Interweavestore.com .

The featured designer, Ronna Sarvas Weltman, is truly meant  to teach in motion! She has a style which is unique and fascinating to watch, and yet her creations are applicable to your own specific work in every way. This is because she teaches proper metal working, as well as encouraging the viewer's creativity in all ways.

If you are a beginner, this great 75 minute DVD will quickly get you started understanding and using different sizes and types of wire (she offers projects with both sterling silver and copper), and will show you how to stock your studio for metal working (the introduction has a great list of the types of pliers, hammers, and other basics you will need, and their uses are very clearly demonstrated by her). Additionally, her projects are suitable for both eager early learners and old hands who would like to get a boost from watching someone who is fabulously enthusiastic and exhilarating when she creates.  I loved that "five minute WILD ring" she makes. It is a ball (literally)!

I also enjoyed the clasp section. The designer explains that if you understand how to make clasps, you can apply the technique to many other variations of jewelry.  This is a great concept.
She also has a really neat demonstration where she makes a lovely sterling clasp, intentionally "dings" it so it looks messed up, and then fixes it so it is smooth as a mirror once more. I loved it when she then went on to texture it all over and make it into an even more interesting piece.  Ronna Sarvas Weltman  is a very original thinker and creator in my opinion, which is great when you want to watch a DVD more than once and get a jolt of inspiration.

Her simple copper wire dangle is very hip and a project which would appeal to most jewelry designers. The dangle hangs from a copper crescent and that is attached to leather to tie behind the neck. It is really original and outstanding, like all of her work.

She also teaches you how to antique wire with liver of sulpher, and there is a summary at the end which is very useful.

I dont think I have ever seen a DVD by a designer quite like Ronna Sarvas Weltman before. I can clearly understand why Beading Daily put this out, and also why a "sister" DVD is offered with Ronna, called Mixed Media--How to Make Polymer Clay Beads. With her wire expertise, and her cool style, adding polymer clay beads would be a match made in heaven!  I look forward to seeing that DVD soon.

I really recommend
Metalwork
How to SHAPE, TEXTURE, and
ANTIQUE Wireworked Jewelry, and I have to say that as a designer who has always loved metal work, this DVD will definitely remain a favorite of mine. I hope you consider purchasing it, and enjoy it as much as I do!

review of
Color Drenched Metal
Adding patinas to metal jewelry
by Shannon Levart

This pdf  tutorial, written by the designer of elegant jewelry, and the astoundingly talented metalworker Shannon LeVart, is a completely new learning experience for anyone who loves the handmade, striking look of uniquely colored metals.
You have to have a certain amount of experience with metal working, and be aware that there is some equipment which will be necessary to have on hand (it is listed clearly), but Color Drenched Metal is absolutely one of the best tutorials I have ever had the opportunity to read. It is available for sale at Shannon LeVart's missficklemedia Etsy Shop, here .

Frankly, Color Drenched Metal  is a magnificent and completely breathtaking learning experience for the enthusiastic metalworker who wants to plunge wholeheartedly into an exploration of his or her personal aesthetics concerning metal jewelry creations, and try a wholly new, lush direction. That direction is experimentation with vibrantly patina-ted metals. I cannot get over how incredibly exciting these metals are to look at, and the idea that the author has now offered her tutorial to the purchaser in a beautifully photographed, well written, exciting to view and easy to understand tutorial is a fantastic opportunity for eager learners who love new, beautiful concepts based on the classic wonderful idea of patina- ted metal.

Using patina on metal is an old idea based on what happens to metals over time when they age. I remember giving my mother a pair of green verdigris bronze (I think) candlesticks for our porch, which I had chosen because I thought they would look pretty there.  My mother appeared to loved them, but right as I sat there, she laid out some newspapers on the porch coffee table, grabbed some dirt from outside with a trowel, and began "ageing" the candlesticks to her satisfaction  by rubbing dirt all over them. It sounds funny, and it was funny to me at the time, but they were just too perfect looking until she patina-ted them in this fashion. When she was done, they looked 100 percent better. They looked authentically aged. And kind of dirty. Well, that was then. :)

Concerning Color Drenched Metal, I was blown away by the exacting, exciting directions, the thoroughness of the instructions, the specificness of the suggestions concerning materials which you can and cannot use when you  plan to patina  metal, what you can purchase, where you can obtain it to complete your projects and finally, the flat-out, trailblazing originality of this offering.

It is amazing. A complete wonder of a tutorial. Ms. Levart worked hard on this and it shows. She took out all the bugs and mistakes by using her own experiences to write Color Drenched Metal.

PS: Did I mention the incredibly vivid colors available and the mixing and overlaying of colors you can learn to do? It is SO cool!

Do NOT miss it!

When Artbeads asked me if I would be interested in doing a Fall jewelry design using the Pantone colors, I jumped at the chance. I love getting to go through their vast collection of cool offerings and looking around. However, I had my own colors in mind. That is what comes for sitting in a chair in the driveway waiting for your children to get home from school. One day, as I was thinking about the colors I would choose (and I still hadn't looked at the Pantone thing) I began thinking about my birthday, which takes place AT THIS TIME OF YEAR, EVERY YEAR AND NOW WE WILL NOT DISCUSS THAT FURTHER. I asked for nailpolish, shoes (I cannot believe how old my shoes are!!!), and a doll, of course.
Then as I was sitting there waiting for one of my kids, I had an AHA! moment!  I knew that I would be searching for the colors you see above: medium opaque violet, a sort of stone/khaki color, and black. One came from my nailpolish, one came from a shirt I was wearing as I waited for the bus which I had borrowed from Jim, and one was inspired by my new shoes. You will have to figure out which came from which. There is a hint in one of the photos, if you need it.

When the beads and components came, I was thrilled.  I particularly wanted to work with the new Swarovski Elements which look like carved stone. That is why I ordered three 8mm Ceramic Faceted Rounds Marbled beads, available here
Having used them, although they seem to fly against the sparkly, extraordinary clarity which Swarovski is famous for, I would definitely try them again. They are cool. You have to see them in person to understand their finesse.
Another thing I wanted to try out, other than MORE Swarovskis  (4mm bicones, and 6mm rondelles) was a bouquet of pretty hand made Hill Tribe head pins which would give my design a flowery look, topping off the three Ceramic rounds. I ended up choosing a lush looking sterling scrolled ring because in the Fall, I feel as if all the growing things go a bit haywire and wild before the winter. Weeds and flowers and fruits and vegetables all combine to enmesh themselves in one last final fling.

So this is my "Fall Fling Ring". I hope you like it! I thank Artbeads for the beads and components, lovely as always. I cannot recommend their service and their packaging more highly! If you want to have some fun with your jewelry designs, go to Artbeads!

Thank you, Artbeads, for the opportunity to create this fun ring!

jean

here is a video I chose to go with this project for two deep intellectual reasons:
1) I like the song and I like Del Amitri
2) I know that this song is called "Be My Downfall"
get it? Down Fall!

The remarkable Andrew Thornton

This week, on Andrew's super blog, he has an entry which is a question and answer interview. He was honored (as he says, and he is correct!) to be interviewed by Ray Hemachandra of the great publishing company, Lark Books. Their jewelry and crafts publishing division is always so exquisitely produced. Take it from me,  I know. I review their books!
I personally have also interviewed Andrew. I interviewed  him for Australian Beading magazine, for my column, "Our Beading World".

You can't NOT want to interview Andrew. He is one of a kind. You want to know more about him to find out more about what motivates him and what fuels his creativity. It is as simple as that. He is an inspiration to all of us...to all artists. You know, every soul has an artist's soul. I believe this with all my heart. Therefore, when Andrew begins by saying he blogs about life in this interview, he is drawing us closer to the understanding that life and art are inseparable. Any expression of human living has an underlying aspect of art, don't you think? That is just my own thought.
To read Andrew's GREAT blog entry, go to the link below his photo above.
To get to the interview, scroll down a few posts! It truly is a wonderful interview with very incisive, open ended questions by Ray, which Andrew answered in his delightful, honest, and fascinating manner. I am so happy to blog about this. A very worthwhile read. Don't miss it!

The new season of House begins next week. I am a huge fan! Therefore, this new season coming up prompted me to think about the names of the characters.  I wanted to try to analyze why they are named what they are named for this TV series I love so much. As some of you may know, I love to analyze dreams, so I used the same technique when I went though the characters' names on the TV show and why they might have been named what they were named.

House: This is obvious: a house, in a dream , is the entire ego, id, and conscious/subconscious personality of the person who is dreaming. As such, House would be the main character in a TV show. There are many rooms to houses in dreams: some are discovered and familiar. Some are yet to be discovered. How many are secret? What secrets do they hold for the character and/or the viewer to discover? That remains to be seen. Hugh L. has incredible ability as an actor and can carry this sort of complex part, remaining ever fascinating.

Cuddy: This name, of the devoted head of the hospital , Lisa Cuddy, is two names in one. In my opinion, the name "Cuddy" sounds like "rudder", and she is the person who steers the hospital/ship. She is the boss. However, her desires to have a baby and to be a mother add an extra dimension to her character. Therefore, her name begins with C (for children, or for cry--she has emotions and openly displays them)  and ends with Y ( for babY, and once again, for crY).

Foreman: well if this isn't obvious then I don't know what is. Foreman is named for "Foremen", everywhere. They run the jobs, or attempt to. Foreman is often depicted butting heads with the primary boss (House) of the team.

Wilson: remember the movie Tom Hanks was in where he was a castaway on an island and his best friend was a ball named Wilson? Wilson is that ball, Wilson. He is House's likeable, if occasionally weak sidekick. You gotta love a guy named Wilson. Plus you can kick him around (if you are House) and he doesn't complain much.

Amber: Spiders and bugs frozen via tree sap into petrified beauty, Amber represented the allure of the eternal evil woman. Note as well: "Amber alert". This is not to say that amber is not a beautiful thing, or that the name is not a beautiful name. In this case though Amber is/was a highly sexually referenced name. Amber tortured House.

13: the bisexual beauty with a potentially deadly inherited disease, 13 is a lucky number in some countries and not as lucky a number in others. Like here. That she is only a number and that her real character name is not used reflects her powerfulness (13 is a powerful number), AND her powerlessness. Her unluckiness, and her bisexual label must be noted as well. She doesn't "deserve" a name because her labels ( eg: bisexual, and possible early death) preclude a name.

Kutner: he cut himself and his feelings off from everyone on the tightly knit team, and ultimately, shockingly, committed suicide. There was NO explanation for it. This is representative of being cut out of things ... or of being apart, to the utmost degree. KUT-ner.

Cameron: Cameron sounds like "Camera". Her  character is reluctant to commit to life, ever since her first husband died. She is a viewer, a snapshot taker, from the sidelines, although she would like to be more than that. She always runs away.

Chase: Chase? Chase is named Chase because he follows his heart and chases dreams.

did I get them all?

oh wait ...Taub. The fellow who screws up his marriage on a regular basis. The only thing I could "get" for Taub was this: http://www.taubaauerbach.com/standardinstall2.html

This is a show by TAUB-a auerbach, called the uncertainty principle. Taub definitely is uncertain about what he wants out of marriage and life. he needs to learn to be happy but he is clueless, in a different, lesser way than House.

Hope you enjoyed this. If I left anyone out or you disagree, let me know!

I had an urge to create a design which would be reflective of the ambiance of the word "pellucid".

The earrings which I made have lots of tiny Swarovskis, teardrop bubble components in sterling, large Swarovski oval links which are very, very sparkly, and on the bottom, where you can barely see, each earring has a fine silver Hill Tribe dangle with a ball on the end, as well as the crystals. They are hung from sterling "threader" earring wires with a U in the middle so they don't fall off your ears.

So...Voila! These are my "Pellucid Earrings"...however... I designed them and then looked the word up in the dictionary!

Here is what I found:

What do you think? Did I manage to hit the mark? Or am I waaayyyyyyy off?

Let me know!

Definition of PELLUCID

1: admitting maximum passage of light without diffusion or distortion <a pellucid stream>

2: reflecting light evenly from all surfaces

3: easy to understand

— pel·lu·cid·ly\pə-ˈlü-səd-lē\ adverb

Examples of PELLUCID
<the pellucid waters that lap upon that island's beaches>
<her poetry has a pellucid simplicity that betrays none of the sweat that went into writing it>

Origin of PELLUCID
Latin pellucidus, from per through + lucidus lucid — more at for

First Known Use: 1610

They were almost impossible to photograph. They are draped on our birdbath with a bit of water below them. Do not, unless you know what you are doing when you take photographs (which I don't most of the time!) attempt to make grey and silver and variations thereof when you are designing jewelry. Suggested successful colors for use in jewelry photography for people like me: blue. blue.

Oh yeah, and blue. :)

I like that this word originated around 1610. You know how very much I love words. They run around in my mind and mesmerize me, like soothing hands rubbing my temples. Very relaxing to have a hobby such as loving words. Words such as pellucid.

Thanks for looking! Let me know if I nailed it with this design, or achieved the antonym, instead!

In that case, Whoops!

My philosophy is that life is a party and it doesn't matter what the occasion: we should celebrate! This wonder of a bracelet is gold-filled and vermeil, with fabulous polymer beads by Emma Ralph. I really don't recall her doing this style more than once or twice. They are exceptionally stunning beads, requiring much work. I used all colors of pearls to enhance the beads' beauty, from peach, to white to peacock. I used paveed gold-filled beads, and tiny white pearls. I used peach Swarovskis, fuchsia ones, and also citrine colored ones, which match the gold filled toggle with the inlaid citrines. There are also Swarovski Tahitian colored glass pearls to add a bit of smoky mystery.
For the dramatic woman who is beyond fashionable and into complexities which are known only to her, this is the perfect bracelet. Work-intensive, lovely, and one of a kind. A beautiful piece!"

I got this wonderful email from my firend Kim Miles with her latest idea. I love it so much that I wanted to share it with you!

Hello Dear Beadists!

New in the BeadShop, Gratitude Bracelets!

More than just a pretty strand of beads, Gratitude Bracelets serve to focus the mind on the goodness in our lives, rather than on lack. What we "feed", we grow, and focusing on the positive invites more of the same into our lives. To use them, simply pass the glass beads, one by one through your fingers, saying "Thank You" at each stop, for something you appreciate in your life. When you get to the silver bead, ask for something, if you still feel there's something you need,

or offer another prayer of gratitude for the abundance already in your life. Alternatively, use them as prayer beads in your own preferred tradition. And of course, however you use them, enjoy them!

This bracelet is made with 30 Zen Beads and one large sterling silver bead, strung on sturdy elastic cord. It will fit an average 7-8 inch wrist. It comes in its own fabric bag, with an instruction card.
