I am just in awe of the Fall edition of the Rings N Things catalog! Why? Because the choices offered to you will get your creativity going FULL steam at this important time of year! You can find inexpensive, yet charming jewelry components, to make for Holiday presents, or you can go right up the scale and pull up all the stops, using your design savvy to create chic jewelry pieces which will be cherished and passed on for ages.
I will give you some examples which appealed to me:
In the inexpensive category, there are some tiny ceramic keyboards (item # 28-684-311)  which measure 6x14x5mm. I fell for these like a ton of bricks because we have so many music lovers in our family! There are lots of other choices of these tiny ceramic beads, by the way, and they are $1.15 each or $9.50 for ten. You could make a great necklace or bracelet and earrings with these cuties. If you prefer bats, hamburgers, giraffes, or high heels, among a plethora of other tiny ceramic beads, they are available. I can just picture my keyboard beads on a silver colored chain, with crystals in jet black and icy white, jangling and dangling merrily. A very unusual and fun jewelry design.

I also would like to point out the "Bound Heart" wrap bracelet which Mollie Valente designed. This is, and I quote, " A six foot length of suede, designed to be wrapped around the wrist multiple times. Heart pendant,

[which comes in four colors  (this is the antiqued silver (#49-950-06-5)
is fabulous!--jean]
 p. F-23, Tube beads, p. D-15". This is truly cool. I can't think of anyone who wouldn't be delighted with a beautifully designed bracelet like this. The heart is hammered and very organic looking and the tubes are just the right accent for the suede. You can get the suede lace in eight colors, available on page F-42.  It is nice, high quality suede which comes in spools for $15.00 a spool.

Rings N Things has everything! These are just my picks.
They have something for everyone. They have wire lace, bezels (for example, this, an Amate Studio base element bottle cap shape (#46-881-266-3), which I liked a lot, only $4.00:

Stock#: 46-881-266-3
26mm bottle cap bezel pendants with one loop. Base Elements™ by Amate Studios™. Approx. 6mm deep bezel. 5.5-6mm inner diameter loop. Made from recycled steel bottle caps. More details...

They have polymer, a nice collection of tools, cubic zirconia -- you name it! You really must visit their site or get the catalog and spend a day, or two, or three!, enjoying their offerings. They have lots of pre-made designs from people who have designed using their components, so you can see what can be done with their materials, and they have SO many pretty, pretty things!

PS: do NOT miss their selection of fantastic stones, cut in amazing shapes! Your focals will never be the same!

From the Soft Flex Company, I just got a look at a stunning project which you can whip up really quickly, although it appears very complex to make and is definitely totally chic.
Designed by the fabulous Sara Hardin, you could choose to use the black color beading wire, as she did, or any of a huge number of other fantastic colors which Soft Flex offers. I do like the black, personally, as this is called The Faux Barbed Wire Bracelet.
Put your tattoo plans on hold and make a few of these bracelets instead! They will be greatly loved by all your hip friends, as well! Here is the link on the Soft Flex site to the free project:

Thanks, Soft Flex and Sara   :)  !!!, for this uber cool offering which we can all enjoy at an easy-on-the-wallet price!

Metal Clay Origami Jewelry

by Sara Jayne Cole
review by jean
This jewelry design book is very simple in concept, yet very satisfying in the results the reader can obtain from following the author's original and inventive ideas.
I have been fascinated by the ancient art of origami, or paper folding, since I was a child and received my first book, including the paper sheets you use to make the different shapes as you get progressively better at folding. How clever of the author of Metal Clay Origami Jewelry to put the idea of origami paper folding and folding precious metal clay (or fine silver clay, if you prefer) together. It is a perfect fit the way Sara Jayne Cole guides you from one to the other. The paper is essential to practice with, at first, if you have never tried origami, however the author explains the difference between the feel of the paper and the feel of the metal clay, so you will know what to expect.
First, please do make sure you read the entire introduction and the basics, which will assist immeasurably later on, when you are working on the projects. These are very easy to understand. The author also lets you know what tools will be required as well. There is a great section on liver of sulphur, which continues to intrigue the jewelry world with its "spectrum of colors" as Ms. Cole says.
Unless you have never used metal clay and are afraid of new things(it really isn't so new any more! Try it!), or do not understand how to use a kiln, you won't have any problems. This book is going to be a blast for you to experience because the author is so enthusiastic and the projects range from simple to more complex.Some include gem stones or art glass. Ms Cole explains how to fire using art glass.  She explains the slight shrinkage which occurs with precious metal clay as well, and how you can employ this to effectively enclose or hold a stone or an art glass bead. I particularly liked that. She also illustrates the times where a designer would choose to use a fine silver prong instead--for example to add a pearl to a finished piece. Very nice instructions!
Be prepared to be charmed and fascinated by the translation of origami into metal clay via this fine book. There are twenty five projects and each one is perfectly lovely. You haven't really seen origami until you have seen it expressed in this manner.
I liked the very first project right off the bat. This is a good sign to me, as it usually means that I will want to try an easy project and go on to progress further. This project is a folded ring, called the Diagonal Fold Ring. Because the author is so clever,  she has also offered a variation on this which flips it to the reverse side. This variation sports the pearl on the prong I previously mentioned and is really pretty!
Eleanor's Star, named for the author's mother (it was a Mother's Day present) is the cover piece and a great project to try. Such a pretty pendant with a dichroic glass bead enclosed. The author says,"This star evolved from my fascination with crease patterns. I love to unfold an origami sheet and admire the complex pattern of lines that results from even a few folds".
I think that is very illuminating and a good trick to try yourself. What a thinking designer!
You will see what she means if you try this project, which is very lovely. You fold, you unfold, you pinch the crease lines  and refold, and eventually you get to a star shape. As with all of the projects, EVERY step is clearly photographed so that there is NO confusion.
Ms. Cole finally shows you how to embed the art glass cabochon into the center of the star, which will shrink just enough to hold it after firing. She explains how to fire with glass which I previously mentioned during this project. Well done and so pretty.
There are other pendants,  pins and beads to explore in this great book as well. With the beads you can make bracelets and earrings. There is a stunning charm bracelet with all colors of metal clay in three sizes (and a great variation using plastic mesh) called Bulb Bead. This is really striking and the author created hollow beads which will stand up to wear on your wrist no matter what. This may be my favorite piece in the entire book. Wait until you see it!
Other projects include a small charm you could use on a charm bracelet all by itself, a luxe necklace of Pinwheel Pod Beads you could wear anywhere and wow everyone, a big dramatic ring called Bling Ring which has a CZ crowning it (I would take that one too in a pinch!!!--guess I will just have to make it myself!) and so many more. I also have to mention the exquisite Lily Earrings and Pin.
I am finding it hard to stop writing about this book because it is so very good. To have an idea and transfer it over to another medium, and then experiment so very clearly and beautifully is just exhilarating to me to see and read about.
There is an inspiration section at the end, lovingly photographed.
I think Sara Jayne Cole is a perfectly fantastic designer and writer. She clearly loves what she does.This is so important in the jewelry world. It raises a book way up on the scale, to my mind.
Metal Clay Origami Jewelry is a unique and fabulous jewelry design book which should not be missed!

Have you ever said to yourself, "I love doing what I do creatively, but I am so curious about another form of art...how do I get started?"

I know I have! Not only have I tried needlepoint, embroidery, drawing (to be honest, that was my first love for years--way before  I made jewelry), painting (to draw and be good at it is not to paint and be good at it!), stamping with a cut potato (OK, I was a nursery school teacher at the time but it was interesting), gluing stuff to other stuff, making papier mache', blowing eggs and making ornaments out of them, knitting (I cannot knit to save my life), writing (I think that is fairly obvious), music (I used to play the guitar), annnnnnnnnnnd.......... sewing.

here is the kit for "Otis and Rhubarb"...have you ever seen anything like this?  I love this! Look at the fabrics and the enchanting designs and the mixes of colors--how can you not be cheery with Otis and Rhubarb keeping you company? I totally fell for them at first sight!

This entry is about sewing, and about a friend of mine who is extremely famous for her ebulliently patterned and colored ceramic beads, and her fantastic book on how to make jewelry using them, Jennifer Heynen. Here is her blog link:
Her website, Jangles, and her blog are both fantastic and one of a kind.
I think she is a genius.
The neat thing is, she has taken her cheery, original bead style and translated it into amazing fabrics, and then taken the fabrics and made patterns for four very flexible (you can use them in many ways) things you can sew. You will fall in love at first sight with the fabric kits and with the creations she has designed.
What a brilliant person she is!
I think you really MUST go see these cool new offerings from Jennifer, and definitely consider extending your art repertoire to include one more really enjoyable and really terrific talent: sewing.
You will NOT see fabrics and designs for the uses of them, in the way that Jennifer has thought them up, anywhere else! She is GREAT!!! She did a wonderfully inspiring job and I LOVE what she has done!
Thanks, Jennifer, for opening up a whole new path to fun for us!

My photo of a one of a kind necklace I designed, lovingly photoshopped by Teresa Laliberte' of Lavendar Creek Glass : she is a much better photographer than I am!

Thank you for lending  my photo back to me, Teresa!

This close up is larger than life. It is a Byzantine Rose pattern chain maille necklace woven by me entirely of sterling jump rings.
There are semiprecious rough cut amethyst rondelles accented with Swarovski Elements crystal rounds in emerald. The beautiful sterling leaves of two shapes, and the pansies are from Andrew Thornton's family's store:
Green Girl Studios . At the moment, they are not even available!

There is a sterling toggle. There is also a superlovely and sturdy "pod" head pin, made of fine silver, which wire wraps Teresa's focal. The head pin is from one of my favorite artists, Kate McKinnon

Now what is this necklace about? It is named after the incredible focal: "The Peace Goddess" which Theresa created SO beautifully, to express, through her lamp work skills, the earthiness, fertility, eternal femininity, and sensuousness which is WOMAN. It has a psychedelic sort of color scheme (hence the "Peace" part of the name) yet it fits right into any kind of style if you are proud to be yourself.
I have loved it, and stored it as a treasure since I first made it for my chain maille gallery.
The "Peace Goddess" focal alone is worth over one hundred and fifty dollars...and to me is priceless.
I do not think that Teresa has done one quite like it since.

Now it is time to hopefully raise some money with this beautiful designer jewelry piece for Andrew Thornton, who needs to pay for some hefty medical bills.
Jim and I know plenty about suddenly needing money, because of our kids with autism, who both have seizures now and require expensive medications on a daily basis. People came to our assistance when we were first stunned with our new situation. We haven't forgotten how dear and united the beading community was to us. You get, you give, and you experience the wonder of how the online internet community can become like your family when you need them.

We really want to help Andrew! My friendship with him goes way back!

Please consider bidding on my "Peace Goddess" necklace if it appeals to you. I assure you, you will never see another jewelry piece like it, and that if it is your style, you will be very happy with it. You will look like a total babe in it! I think it will enhance your allure and tap you directly into the female powers of the "Venus of Willendorf"
who is estimated to have been carved between 22,000  and 21,000 B.C.E.
Our auction for Andrew is a ten day auction, beginning the 21st of October and ending the 31st. Please don't bid unless you sincerely want to help and really want the necklace. I will accept Paypal and money orders.
I am hoping this unique piece will attract some cool and sympathetic Goddesses and Gods who understand how wonderful it is to help others when help is needed!

love and good luck on your bidding. I will accept bids through my email:
jyatesnewyork@aol.com

Just write on the subject header: for Andrew

If the highest bid is a tie bid on Oct 31, the first person who placed the bid will win.

THANK YOU so much!!!

Nina Designs remarks upon the higher price of silver, and consequently vermeil in the online store's email to me today. Here is the email I received:

Dear Jean Yates,
As many of you may have heard in the news, the price of silver has been rising rapidly. Since mid-August, silver has increased 27% and is currently hovering around $23 an ounce. This is much higher than what is covered by our 25% silver surcharge. As a result, we must increase our surcharge.
Effective Monday, October 18 at 8:30 am, prices will go up approximately 20%, from a 25% surcharge to a 50% surcharge. This will affect all sterling silver, gold plate vermeil and 14K gold filled styles.
Additionally, due to steep increases in gold prices, our gold plate surcharge will increase from 65% above the price of the silver version to 75%. This is a 26% net increase on gold plate styles when combined with the overall surcharge increase.
Tools, silk, leather, gemstones, non-metal items and discontinued sale items are excluded from the price increase. This makes discontinued sale items an exceptional value. Get them while you can because with silver this high, we will eventually melt down much of our discontinued inventory!
Obviously, we have no control over the price of silver. We sincerely hope the price stabilizes, although all indications are that it will continue to soar. If silver continues to rise quickly, so will our surcharge, possibly as early as next month. If silver prices fall and remain there for a period of time, we will lower the surcharge as we did in December 2008. Nothing would make us happier than a return to lower prices!
Backorders from orders placed on and after October 11th will be invoiced at the higher price because we will have paid the higher price on the incoming stock that we will be sending to you. Please let us know if you'd like to cancel any backorders. Backorders that were already in process prior to October 11th will receive the 25% surcharge price.
Please note that orders will be processed and pulled as we normally do: orders with expedited shipping (UPS Overnight, 2-Day, and 3-Day) are pulled before UPS Ground and Priority Mail orders. UPS Ground and Priority Mail orders are processed in the order received. This is important to keep in mind because we may run out of stock on some items and backorders will be at the higher price.
We agonize over price increases because of the negative impact it has on you, our valued customer. We deeply regret raising prices in the midst of such a rough economy. However, the only alternative would be to shut our doors, which would not help anyone. We are committed to using creativity and innovation to bring you new inspired jewelry findings. Let’s work together to make it through this difficult time!
We appreciate your understanding. Please feel free to call with any questions.

note from jean: I LOVE this store and have made many published (and private) designs such as my exotic cover for Simply Beads Magazine, using Kim Miles' "Mended Heart" and her stunning purple and red accent beads, with all of their fantastic silver: black satin, regular sterling, and an amazing heavy duty sterling clasp. I never had to look further for inspiration than what Nina Designs has to offer for many of my pieces. I know we are all suffering during this silver crisis, but I expect that it will settle down shortly, as did the last one. That is what I am hoping, anyway. In the meantime, support your favorite stores and understand that what we are going through, they are going through as well!

While reading the frontispiece of 500 Judaica, Innovative Contemporary Ritual Art, I found a clear way of understanding what this magnificent book is all about.
For one thing, the pieces within this soft cover volume are "more than purely artistic". They are meant to be used in the practice of Jewish ritual. To quote and also paraphrase the frontispiece:
"If there is one thing these works have in common," writes juror David Belasco, "it is the ongoing faith that creativity and ritual go hand in hand ... to keep Judaism a living and ever-evolving tradition."
The book is split into three sections: Craft (essentially contemporary Judaica combined with folk style), Modernist ( this sort has an affinity for the use of metal, and places an emphasis on essential forms in the piece), and post Modernist, which reflects the increased awareness of the artist to include social content to expand the references of Jewish ritual objects to reflect the sacred to everyday life.
These three sections are further explained in David Belasco's excellent, concise foreword.
500 Judaica was authored by Ray Hemachandra, the Team Lead for the Jewelry & Beading team at Lark Crafts, and Daniel Belasco, who is Henry J. Lehr Assistant Curator at the Jewish Museum in New York City.
Additionally, there is a helpful glossary included defining the basic ritual objects.
Now that I have explained the basis of this remarkable book to the reader, I feel compelled to remark upon my reaction to this beautiful testimonial to faith and to creativity combined. I was moved so strongly that there were times I felt like crying while viewing the wonderful ritual art pieces.On a smaller scale, it could be construed as similar to the uplifting feeling I get when I see a glorious building which has been created to honor an important religious concept.
When humanity strives to put into concrete form the spiritual drive which most of us keep our hearts open to, the results are more than just artistic. They are brilliantly and intensely reaching out to our passion to  understand and honor that which we perceive as greater than we are.

This exquisitely photographed, supremely enthralling book, 500 Judaica, offers many reasons to draw the reader to it. It is incredibly worthwhile to purchase as a gift, to mark an occasion, or for the collector of wonderful art books. As a chronicle of faith, shown through contemporary Judaic art form, it manages to be specific to the religion it is addressing, and as well also to the profound passion which all religion engenders in humanity. The photos are incredibly varied and each one is completely worthy to be showcased in this amazing book.
A part of the Lark 500 series, it is an extraordinary distillation of modern offerings from of one of the very first monotheistic religions(one which is over 3000 years old). This covenant of religious beliefs and traditional practices is now expressed in the 500 contemporary art pieces in 500 Judaica. The word Judaica, as defined by Merriam-Webster, is "literary or historical materials relating to Jews or Judaism", and yet there is so much more to this book. Instead of narrowing the view of this specific religion and and the celebration of it through art and Judaic art pieces, the book shares with everyone who reads it the powerful feelings which inspire artists when they are creating work derived from spiritual concepts.
I would like to address the cover of the book as an example of what the reader will find to appreciate within 500 Judaica. The cover depicts a contemporary Menorah, used at Hanukkah. Hanukkah is the eight day Festival of Lights commemorating the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem in 164 BCE. In Wikipedia, on Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2010, I found this:"From the Hebrew word for "dedication" or "consecration", Hanukkah marks the rededication of the Temple after its desecration by the forces of the King of Syria and commemorates the "miracle of the container of oil". According to the Talmud, at the re-dedication following the victory of the Maccabees over the Seleucid Empire, there was only enough consecrated olive oil to fuel the eternal flame in the Temple for one day. Miraculously, the oil burned for eight days. There is a ninth branch for a so-called "helper" candle, called the Shamash.
I felt the power of the photo on the cover drive its way right into my heart. The Festival of Lights is represented by the colors of silver and blue. This beautiful, inspiring Menorah is silver and blue and has a soaring sense of energy and glory finely suited to its function. The bottom, which is the blue part, looks like a Shofar to me, A Shofar is a horn (usually a ram's horn) used in Jewish religious services.
All in all, I consider this an exquisite and moving piece of modern ritual art.
Please consider this extraordinary book for your own collection, or to commemorate an important occasion such as a Bar Mitzvah or a Bas Mitzvah. It is appropriate for Jewish weddings, or for a bris, or for any sort of time when Jewish people gather to celebrate their traditions. It would make a fine gift for a "thinking" art lover and collector, who is might be a part of any sort of religion whether Jewish or not.
I know.
I am Catholic.
I am honored to have this remarkable volume in my library.

Yesterday's Storm:
A New Dawn

I received a lovely card by post (not email!) from a dear friend who is doing GREAT in her personal fight against breast cancer. I was touched that someone who is busy being treated, working at her job, and running her house, as well as consistently and enthusiastically participating in many of the same photography groups I am in on Flickr would take the time to hand write (in the beautiful writing I have always wanted, which eludes me due to my jumbled up left-handed scrawl) such a wonderful card to me.

Here we have had terrible weather and I was offline yesterday.  One of the kids had a seizure as well. Now the sun is out, our electricity is working, and our TV and computer power are both back on. Our kid is sleeping peacefully after his long day yesterday and his own personal storm.

I had a post planned for yesterday (I will write it on Monday) but today I wish to write instead about Breast Cancer Awareness because of my friend, her card, what she means to me. I know we all know a lot BUT you can learn more! There are many good reasons why you should support this cause!

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. If you go to Google.com, and type in Breast Cancer Awareness, you will see tons of information concerning the major sites where you can find information on breast cancer.

If you go to Etsy.com and wish to purchase something special for as a gift a survivor or for yourself you will find, first off,  there is this which I found:

SEE NEXT POST FOR OCTOBER FUNDRAISER INFORMATION

The Etsy Angels work together to raise money for different charities: the Chintimini Wildlife Rehab Center in Corvallis, Oregon; Friendly Kitchen of Concord, NH; Bellwether Harbor Foundation in Michigan, etc.

If you like what you see, and you would like to join a very "close", small Etsy Team and you would like to join us, please contact Sewinggranny or Ozarknana for information.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Our Team was formed after the many hours spent together promoting for Dawn’s Boys; an effort that began in late December 2007 after a Jewelry artist who was on both Etsy and Ebay lost her life in an automobile accident. She left behind two little boys. Several "Angels" came together to help. After spending countless hours promoting donations from more people than we could imagine that wanted to help, many friendships were made. We couldn’t imagine it all ending without creating a Team for Dawn’s Angels. ♥
WE RUN…WE DANCE…WE CELEBRATE…WE WILL FIND THE CURES
During the entire month of October the Etsy Angels will be raising funds for the Louisville affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the cure® and their "Race for a Cure"®. The Komen Louisville Race for the Cure® is a celebration to honor survivors and a time to remember those who have lost the battle with breast cancer. It is a safe, fun-filled event with music, food and opportunities to learn more about breast cancer.
Monies raised for the Louisville chapter will go to help them with events such as the Race for the Cure® and the Pink Tie Ball. "The Louisville Affiliate has raised and granted millions to local breast health programs in our service area."
The Angels charity fundraiser starts on October 1st and runs through October 31. Please join us by shopping at the participating Etsy Angel stores listed below where a portion of our sales will be donated to the Louisville, Kentucky chapter.
