Hello! It is I, jean yates, columnist for Australian Beading for quite a few years now!
I originally was a submitter to Australian Beading. That was it. I sent in a charm bracelet--really full and replete with tons of Sally Jean charms, and also pearls and beautifully colorful art glass boro beads from Lisa Kan, as well as Swarovski Element crystals. I used a lovely clasp from Green Girl Studios and did everything I could to make it the prettiest bracelet I could imagine. Lisa Kan had been kind enough to introduce me to the magazine. She had already appeared in it with a glorious leaf necklace. The editor, who is a fantastic person, liked my bracelet so much she actually wore it out to a business/jewelry function and showed it off there! Then she put it on the cover of the issue I was in! I was completely thrilled, as you can imagine.
yes, I know this is a very small photo. However it is the only one I can find at the moment. Ahhh, my fleeting five minutes of fame.

yes, I know this is a very small photo. However it is the only one I can find at the moment. Ahhh, my fleeting five minutes of fame.Anyway, now I write for the magazine. Lisa Kan and I started off writing together but she got really busy. Anyone who knows Lisa knows she is always really really busy...and anyone who knows me knows I am really really at peace with my carefully modulated pace, which is something between slow, really slow and a dead stop.
I asked Kelly the editor if I could cover the whole column by myself after Lisa left. When she said yes, I was so happy I almost jumped for joy and I have been in love with this job ever since! I can do this job from my house, I can review books and discuss them with the authors, I can interview artists from every aspect of the beading arena, and I can show new products which I discover online and find interesting. I can also learn new things in an open ended section of the column called "What is Jean Up to Now?" As I really honestly do love learning things, this section is great as far as I am concerned. I can go all over the place with it!
When there is room, I even get to put a photo of one of my Blythe dolls wearing jewelry which I have made, and pretty clothes by people whom I have sought out into my column.
My photo above was not in, but the earrings were. You get the idea --its a win-win for me! --click photo to make larger
My column is called "Our Beading World" by Jean Yates. I have had the honor of having some of the greatest jewelry makers and designers, writers and bead makers, agree to talk with me. I just cannot believe how lucky I am. We put up their photos which they submit as well (after all, this is a magazine and very glossy and lovely). I think the column is a great representation of lots of different things for the jewelry loving Australians over on the other side of the world. They get a fast glimpse of what is going on here. I essentially only cover the USA. I thank my lucky stars I got this job. It is just perfect for me!
Have a Happy Weekend!
