Fusion Beads 30 Day Bead Challenge (jean's learning curve day)
Day 7 - Use a Different Metal in Your Jewelry
Some people are sterling silver purists and some people swear by antique brass - today, you are all challenged to get outside of your box and use a metal that you normally don't work with! Try silver, gold, brass, copper or gunmetal!
You'll be surprised, you might just love it!
OK, I got out of my box. Then what? That wasn't enough?
I really needed, after making my first mosaic, to stay in my box and bring a bunch of pillows and a lamp in there and read a book in my family's living room , as I used to when a kid, and they were all watching TV. It is good to have an accepting family when you are reading Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery" for the fifth time in your box.
I have made things of resin before. Some have been quite good. I use directions by Cynthia Thornton--this is her bezel and I adore everything about it. Also I am really careful about glueing my print background in with the right glue and using interesting methods of curing, like Lisa Pavelka's resin and her UV lamp.
Some of the things I usd are available at Fusionbeads.com, like the bezel and the glue.
ON THE OTHER HAND... deciding to use the little deer was waaaaaay over my head.
I was hoping to dome my resin--her resin is GREAT for that!!! But the little deer had a big nose. I cropped a lot of his body off but how cruel to crop off a potential future Rudolph. I would have PETA on me in NY minute. I do not need publicity of that sort.
So I left his nose and took my punishment.
I couldn't get the darn bubbles out for the life of me.
Ergo (cool word!) ... Let's pretend it is a fantastically artistic, intentional "deer bubble" NECKLACE and keep calm and carry on. Part of why I am doing this 30 day Bead Challenge by Fusion Beads is to learn.
Well today I learned that I can use a different metal--pewter, just fine.
But I also learned that, unlike me, cramming myself in a box in my family's living room, some items just can't be crammed into other items. PERIOD.
Thanks for the fun, Fusion Beads! And it was! And I am definitely not too proud to show my oeuvre off:
back of pewter bezel by GGS
front of pewter bezel by GGS, with stunning dear bedecked in magical necklace!!! hahahahahahaha
The title of this fab. attempt by me is "Bubbles the Deer"
jean!--ummmm I meant to do it! yeah, that's the ticket! :)

Hey Jean! That deer is cute. The bubbles form a kind of necklace for him! How fortuitous! Resin can be tricky. I think I prefer old school resin, even though it doesn't dome. Its way easier to remove bubbles from. Maybe two kinds can be used. The regular resin to fill, then when that sets, doming resin on top. I'll try it. Anyway, it looks pretty good! Congrats on getting in Australian Beading! Great job!
You are such a sweet person. Any time you want, you let me know and I will invite you back to AU Beading with one of your gorgeous projects or beads. I have your Rumi shibu bird on a necklace I made of Kimono Silk in the upcoming issue in June!
Your pieces are so lovely!
You brought back memories with "The Lottery" by S. Jackson, that was a fascinating short story about a kind of: "Well, we've always done it this way".
The pewter piece is nice and the deer one is whimsical.
Thank you! Did you read her book We Have Always Lived in the Castle?--I loved that one too!
